Fewer hospital days with simple actions db consulting group
A study conducted at the Department of Clinical db consulting group Memory Research at Lund University and the memory clinic at Skåne University Hospital, SUS, showed that with a few simple methods could reduce the number of days of care for the elderly.
The study included 200 patients who were treated in internal medicine clinic at SUS. Patients were divided into two groups, with one group receiving no extra efforts and the other received three care measures.
In the group that received extra care initiatives were checked patients' memory with memory tests. In cases where the patient had memory problems were advised primary care and community. The patients' medicines were also checked carefully by a pharmacist. In half of the patients were not in the medication list with what primary care prescribing. One explanation may be that primary care medical record can not be linked with the hospitals. In addition, patients received a contact nurse who rang up after a week. About 40 percent had then problems could be solved without needing medical attention.
A year before the study, both groups had about 500 days of care. But a year after the study group had not received additional measures 1,228 days of care while the group receiving care efforts had only 492 days of care. The reduced number of days of care equivalent to a saving of about four million, and scientists therefore believe that healthcare interventions are cost-effective. - It's about the simple steps that might already be routine at our hospital, but who do not currently have time for because of staff pressured db consulting group work environment, says Gustav Torisson, doctors and PhD, in a press release.
